Hall of Fame inductee and unrivalled fireballer Nolan Ryan and Donn Clendenon must share similar fond memories of 1969. One man was the World Series MVP and the other made his only World Series appearance. Their paths would then diverge.
In case you are not aware, the world of baseball is very fickle. Surprisingly, Mr. Clendenon was the MVP that year while Nolan Ryan would make only a single appearance and never play in another World Series game. Yet, Mr. Clendenon was gone from baseball two years later and Mr. Ryan would go on to an illustrious career and retire as the all time strikeout king.
Nevertheless, those two gentlemen and the rest of The Amazin’ Mets brought tears of joy to a group of loyal, but sorely tested fans. It took a team, not individuals, to beat the powerhouse Baltimore Orioles that year and every player on the squad deserves every baseball fan’s respect. Here are the players that we remember the best.
There is no doubt that the Mets pitching staff earned their paychecks during the 1969 Series. After an inauspicious start by Tom “Terrific” Seaver, they allowed only five runs in the final four games. Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry, Ron Taylor and, of course Nolan Ryan leant their considerable skills in the effort. Overall, the Orioles only managed nine runs, 23 hits and a combined batting average of .146.
Ed Kranepool, Bud Harrelson, Jerry Grote, Al Weiss and Ed Charles were the equal of the vaunted Baltimore lineup. There were no outrageous leaps and no diving catches, just the quiet professionalism of a well oiled machine.
Tommie Agee was everywhere. He saved at least a dozen runs with remarkable catches in every game. Ron Swoboda and Cleon Jones both contributed game-saving, diving catches in the late innings.
Yogi Berra and Tom Seaver notwithstanding, Gil Hodges was the heart and soul of this team. Though Tug McGraw did not play in the Series, when he uttered those famous words, “You Gotta Believe” a few years later, he must have been echoing what was in Mr. Hodges’ heart in 1969.
